Accra, May 14, 2025 — A recent operation spearheaded by Ghana’s National Security has led to the arrest of six Indian nationals for engaging in illegal gold trading activities.

Three of the suspects were apprehended at Enyinam in the Eastern Region, while the other three were arrested at Adiembra in the Ashanti Region. The operation, conducted a few days prior, resulted in the seizure of hundreds of gold bars, thousands of cedis, and money-counting machines.

The operation was led by National Security Coordinator, DCOP Abdul Osman, who later addressed the press at the National Security Secretariat in Accra.

Speaking at the media briefing, Prince Minkah, Media Relations Officer for the Ghana GoldBod, confirmed that the suspects would face prosecution.

“For the second batch, they will go to court and face the law. This is a warning to every foreigner in Ghana — local gold trading is the sole reserve of the GoldBod,” Minkah said.

He explained that individuals arrested prior to the April 30 deadline would not be prosecuted but instead deported through legal processes. However, those arrested in this latest operation fall under a second batch and will be prosecuted in court.

“With the latest bust, we found gold bars, money-counting machines, and large sums of cedis — all of which have been confiscated,” he added.

DCOP Osman further disclosed that some Ghanaians were complicit in the illegal operations, allowing their identities to be used by the foreign nationals to register companies. This tactic was reportedly used to evade taxes and conceal the true ownership of the illicit operations.

The Ghana GoldBod has reiterated that any foreign individual who wishes to engage in the gold trade must formally apply to the Ghana GoldBod to buy or off-take gold directly through legal channels.
